NEWS DESK. 27th MAY
Two people were killed in West Bengal as cyclone Remal left a trail of widespread destruction across West Bengal after making landfall between the coasts of the state and Bangladesh on Sunday night. Flight operations have resumed at the Kolkata airport after they were suspended on Sunday noon.
While one person died after a wall collapsed in an old building in Kolkata’s Bibi Bagan, an 80-year-old woman was killed after a tree fell on her in South 24 Parganas district’s Mousuni island.
In its latest update on Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Remal has weakened into a “cyclonic storm” and is likely to gradually weaken even further during the day.
Authorities evacuated more than 1 lakh people from the vulnerable areas in West Bengal.
The cyclone made landfall on Sunday at around 8.30 pm between the state’s Sagar Island and Khepupara in Bangladesh, with wind speeds reaching up to 135 kmph.
In Bangladesh, at least seven people were killed and about 15 million were left without power as the cyclone lashed the coasts of the country with devastating winds of up to 120 kph and storm surges, inundating hundreds of villages.
